Dear Mr. HAWKINS, We arrived here all right and safe about a week ago, and find ourselves a good ways from our father’s home. We stopped at Monterey a day and a half, and took in the places of interest. While there, the Mexicans were celebrating the independence of the rebellion between them and France. It was a grand affair. They had the city lighted up with fancy lights, and the Mexican Bands were filling the air with sweet music, while the cannons were firing, and bells were ringing glad tidings of rejoicing over their victory. We visited the Mexican prison. It is an awful place. To my sorrow, I saw some two or three Americans there. We were invited to go there from the “High Man,” as they call him. He was very kind to us and showed us all through the prison, and explained all the modes of punishment to those who violate the laws. We also visited the soldiers headquarters. Monterey is a lovely city, surrounded by a long chain of mountains and blessed with a healthy climate. Now something about my new home, Tampico, it is a beautiful little city, lying on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, with a population of about 16,000. It has a large wharf and many products from other countries are unloaded here. The Mexican markets are supplied with all fruits, vegetables and meats to be found anywhere on the earth. The mode of dress and eating is quite different from ours, especially eating. They have hot tomatoes for breakfast, for dinner it is fried meat, fish, etc., and for supper they have all kinds of vegetables, fruits, candies, etc. Indeed, they are funny folks to me. The “greasers” look like our mulattos, but the higher class of Spanish Mexicans are nice people, the girls being exceedingly handsome in face, form and figure. They have nice music every night at the Plaza, by the best of bands. By the way, they had an open-air concert last Sunday night, comprising singing, dancing, boxing and music. Of course I went to Church. I am some what “struck” on Tampico. I have secured employment and will go to work Monday. Love to all my friends in dear “old Cov” and success to you. Truly, WM. M.
