He came up from breakfast at his accustomed hour, picked up the weapon to put it in his desk. It accidentally slipped from his grasp and fell to the floor, striking on the hammer. The bullet entered his left leg just above the ankle, and ploughed its way through the flesh and broke both bones in his leg in an awful manner. Several physicians were summoned immediately and dressed the wound. Three pieces of bone were taken out, the largest being about two and a half inches long and an inch wide. The wound was so bad, and the bones so badly shattered that the doctors thought it best to take the limb off at one time; and in fact so strong was this sentiment that Dr. Westmoreland, of Atlanta was called up over the telephone and consulted about it.
