S. HALLMAN has a very nice school here, and he is giving perfect satisfaction. ~Miss FRONEY PERRY, of Covington, is spending a few weeks with Miss MAGGIE WILSON. ~Mrs. BELAND, who has been on the sick list for some time, is improving slowly. ~Mr. LUKE STANTON says that he has __ games hens and gets from seven to ten eggs per day. ~Mr. L. P. DUKE, has had his residence on main street, greatly improved. We hope that some of our neighbors will follow suit. ~Messrs. Patrick & Childs say with one more weeks work they will be ready to grind corn at their new mill. -HUSTLER- WINTON DOTS ~Mr. JAMES HAYS is seriously sick with lung trouble. ~Mr. C. J. MOBLEY has returned from Texas. ~Prof. D. H. MOBLEY has a flourishing new school here with 48 scholars. ~Hon. H. L. GRAVES is Superintendent of our Sunday School and is a favorite with children and teachers. ~We regret to see that Mr. F. M. WHITEHEAD is thinking of selling his valuable property here, for we would not like to have this good man leave our community. ~Mr. THORNTON A. STEARLING is keeping a bachelor hall at W. S. MONTGOMERY place. He has a new horse and buggy, which is evidence that he will try and change his way of living. -JOSEPH- TOWN AND COUNTY, EVERYTHING AND EVERYBODY ~Mr. JOHN SOCKWELL is recovering from a severe kick from a mule. ~Capt. ANDERSON, the handsome Marshal of Social Circle spent several days of last week here attending court. ~Mr. CHARLES BAILY, of Newborn, lost a fine horse by death during the time he was attending court here last week. ~About six or seven hundred dollars was stolen by the burglars who blew open the iron safe in Dr. J. A. WRIGHT’S drug store and the safe in the post office on the night of the 18th inst. ~We learn that our popular fellow citizen, Mr. T. J. SHEPHERD, who represents the most reliable insurance companies in the world has recently issued insurance policies amounting to $90,000 on the Porterdale Company’s property. ~”Uncle DAVIS ROBERTS may be authority on watermelon culture,” said JOHN CHAPMAN, Tuesday, “but I have just finished planting 1989 hills with watermelon seed. If Uncle Davis beats me raising melons he must get up and hustle. ~Mr. HOUSTON A. JONES will visit his brother, Col. IVERSON A. JONES, at Denver, Carroll County, Arkansas at an early day. We hope our friend will have a delightful time during his sojourn among friends and relatives in the west. WISE AND OTHERWISE ~The widows of ex-Confederate Soldiers in Newton County, entitled to a pension from the State, are requested to send their names and proof to Judge J. M. BELCHER, Ordinary of Newton County, at once. ~Mr. EDWARD HEARD’S fine pointer dog “Jack” became wild, or mad, last Friday, and bit several dogs in town. The dog also killed quite a number of chickens in Mr. HEARD’S yard. Fortunately no persons were bitten. The dog was not rabid, but knew its owner and would obey him. Mr. HEARD had it killed. ~A Negro man by the name of SEABORN SMITH, charged with criminal assault on a young colored girl by the name of LEILA AKINS, was tried last Thursday and a verdict of guilty was rendered Friday morning. During the speaking SMITH went fast asleep. He appeared indifferent all during the trial. He is one eyed Negro with a very mean countenance. The hanging is billed for Friday, May 22. ~At the art and book store of J. N. BRADSHAW & Co., is a colored pastel portrait of a beautiful married lady of Augusta. In finish the portrait is as near perfect as any we ever saw. The face looks almost as natural as life itself. Mrs. J. T. CORLEY, JR., the fair artist who did this elegant work, is already gained an enviable reputation as a lady who gives entire satisfaction to those who desire portraits or scenes placed on canvas in pastel, oil, crayon, etc. Her prices are always reasonable and just. ~In the presentments, to be published next week, the grand jury recommends a local road law for Newton County and that convicts be worked on the same. Also that a county court, under the general law, be established, with a recommendation that Col. E. F. EDWARDS be appointed Judge at a salary of $300.00 a year, with Colonel J. S. ROGERS, Solicitor, and all fines, forfeitures and revenues arising from the court in any way be paid into the treasury to be used for county purposes. The jury also unanimously recommend that the county debt be bonded. Also that taxable property be returned at its true value. The Jury was dismissed Monday afternoon. Court adjourned Tuesday.
