The meeting was organized by calling Hon. J. M. Pace to the chair and requesting S. W. Hawkins to act as Secretary. When the chair announced "ready for business," Mr. T. J. Shepherd moved that names of candidates be voted for by ballot-adopted. Mr. J. M. Owens moved to vote for Mayor and Council at one and the same time- lost. Mr. Edward Heard moved that a vote first be taken for Mayor and a seperate ballot be had for six Councilmen- adopted. Messrs. A. B. Simms, Thomas Corley and J. G. Lester were appointed tellers. Mr. O. H. Tucker placed in nomination for Mayor. Dr. J. J. Dearing, seconded by Mr. Edward Heard. Mr. C. B. Rosser put Hon. L. L. Middlebrook in nomination for Mayor; seconded by Mr. T. J. Shepherd. Ballots were prepared and the result announced as follows: DEARING, 55 MIDDLEBROOK, 31 Mr. Middlebrook arose and said he sincerely hoped that the nomination of Dr. Dearing would be made unanimous, and made a motion to that effect, which was carried amid applause. The following gentlemen were supported for councilmen and received the number of votes opposite their names, the six highest being declared the nominees. D. A. THOMPSON, 64 E. P. CARR, 56 C. C. BROOKS, 55 R. H. THOMPSON, 49 E. O. LEE, 49 J. S. CARROLL, 45 W. A. NORTON, 3? C. B. ROSSER 39 A. E. McDONALD, 3? I. W. BROWN, 28 J. A. FARMER, 27 M. B. FOWLER, 22 J. W. ANDERSON, 23 Complimentary votes were cast for a dozen other popular citizens who were in no sense candidates. Before the meeting adjourned resolutions were adopted eulogistic of the retiring Mayor and Council, this one by Mr. Tucker received hearty and enthusiastic applause; "Resolved, That this convention of the citizens of Covington do now extend to the retiring Mayor and Council our congratulations and thanks for their long, faithful and efficient administration of our municipal government. Good order has been maintained, justice and moderation prevailed, and many useful and substantial improvements made for which we are thankful." Mayor Pace acknowledged the compliment paid himself and the retiring Council, after which the convention adjourned. It is hardly necessary to say that the nominated ticked was elected on Monday afternoon without organized opposition. OFFICIAL RESULT, JAN. 17 For Mayor......J. J.
