The shooting occurred about 6 o'clock Saturday evening, in front of W. B. Lee & Co's., furniture store, with a muzzle loading shotgun, the whole load striking the boy just under the left arm, touching the heart and killing him before anyone arrived at the place where he fell. It seems that Simmons had been out hunting, and on coming back through town was joined by Bell, and they were playing with the gun when it was accidentally discharged, with the above stated results. A coroners inquest was held and the verdict was that the boy was accidentally shot and thence his death, but it is believed by some that it was done purposely, although no evidence to that effect could be produced and Simmons was turned loose. This is the fruits of "kids" having guns, and the law makers of our country should prohibit a boy under 16 years of age carrying one. It is miraculous that more small boys do not come to an untimely end in this manner.
