In, fact the county and city of Covington should be congratulated upon possessing able and efficient officers.- Without an exception from our worthy Ordinary to the lowest Bailiff, we believe they are strictly honest and faithful to every trust. It is a pleasure to live in a community where the officers know their duties and have the courage and manhood to see that the law is vindicated and good order maintained. Persons from abroad who are desirous of making their homes among us will find a people that are refined and cultivated, kind and generous, and who will welcome to their homes any industrious person who comes with pure motives and honest purposes to assist in improving and building up the county. The location of our county is north central, with an area of 260 square miles. The surface is uneven, and the best of granite can be found in abundance. The soil is very fertile, and few counties in the State can claim better water power to drive machinery. We have three rivers, Alcova, Yellow and South, besides a dozen or more large creeks in the county. The chief products are cotton, corn, wheat, oats, potatoes, peas, butter, wool, honey, syrup, polk, live stock, cotton, yarn and thread, leather, lumber, melons, vegetables, fruits, etc. The population of the county is 13,619. Politically the county is Democratic with a majority of between two and three hundred votes. Monied men who desire to invent their surplus cash would doubtless be well paid by making a visit to old Newton.
