E. O. LEE the present mayor of Covington, is one of the best known men in the county. He has been in the mercantile business here for about ten years, and by close application to business is considered one among the wealthiest men in Covington. He was born here, and is comparatively a young man. Mr. Lee takes great delight in out-of-door sport, and had rather see a good game of base ball than to be on a band wagon. He is one of the County Commissioners, and has done good work on behalf of the county. SHERIFF H. B. ANDERSON was elected Sheriff of Newton county in '96 after a hard fought battle. He was appointed postmaster here by Grover Cleveland in '86, and held down this position of trust, with marked ability, for two years, when the Republicans regained control of affairs. Sheriff Anderson has the proud distinction of knowing that he was never beaten for an office to which he aspired in his life. He is a good all-round man and is one of the most popular men in this county. MR. R. L. LOYD the tax collector, was born in Newton county in 1856. He has held this position for a number of years and has filled it with ability and promptitude. Mr. Loyd is a gentleman of good moral character and stands at the top round in the estimation of the people of Newton County. MR. J. F. HENDERSON is a member of our city council, and has been prominent in county affairs for a number of years. He was born in this county in 1850, and by his strict devotion to business has amassed a neat sum. He is one of the big tax payers. He has held the office of county treasurer for fourteen years, and has been a member of the council three times. He is a good, honest and upright man and the affairs of our city will always receive attention at his hands. MR. J. W. STEPHENSON has been prominently before the people of Newton county for a number of years, and has always filled it with credit to himself and his constituents. In 1885 he was elected tax receiver, and held this office for fourteen consecutive years. In 1896, he was elected treasurer, which office he now holds. MR. EDD FOWLER, a member of our city council, ws born in this county in 1871. He is one of our most prosperous and hustling business men, being one of the firm of Fowler Bros. & Co., and although the youngest man of the council, will no doubt do the city a great deal of good, by his broad intellect and business qualities. CAPT. G. D. HEARD, one of our best citizens and a member of the city council, is a man of honest convictions and steadfast principles. He responded valiantly to the call of his country, during the civil war, and by his gallantry won the title of "Captain Heard," which remains with him until the present period. MR. C. H. WHITE, one of our most enterprising business men and a member of the city council, has served in this capacity for a number of years and has done a great deal of good for the city. He is one of our most popular citizens and stands high in commercial circles. MR. S. P. THOMPSON, one of the city council has filled this position for several years and has done his duty in a fair and business like manner. Mr. Thompson is well known to our citizens generally as he has been doing a large mercantile business here for a number of years. MR. J. M. BELCHER, the ordinary was born in this county in 1850 and was elected to his present position in 1890. He has therefore, been in office for ten consecutive years, and is one of the best known, and most popular men in this county. His fidelity to his party has never been questioned. He is one of our best citizens. He entered college at an early age, and graduated with the highest honors of his class. After graduating, he took up the profession of teaching and has devoted the greater part of his life to shaping and moulding the character of young men and young women. It can be well said that he has made Newton one of the best public officials.
