It has a population of about seven hundred, was incorporated as a city in 1894, and many improvements have been made in her streets, an era of prosperity and growth dating from that year. Newborn can boast of her beautiful, level streets, all of which have been laid off sixty feet in width, and the blocks cover four acres each way. Beautiful shade trees have been planted on the principal streets since the incorporation and Newborn bids fair to become a town of no mean importance in a few years hence. Her educational facilities are good, she now having one of the most flourishing schools in the county under the principalship of Professor F. A. CHESTNUT, with MISS MAGGIE BLASINGAME as assistant. She has only one white church in the city, but several in close proximity, and three colored churches. Newborn is also considered one of the healthiest places in this section of the state, and is especially noted for its pure, crystal water, which in summer is almost as cool as ice, and is the talk of the traveler whose journey happens to take him through the city. She has five progressive and enterprising merchants who carry large stocks and do a big volume of business yearly, as well as two ginneries, each of which have pressed over 500 bales of the fleecy staple during the season just passed; one grist mill doing a profitable business; a large warehouse operated by J. T. & J. W. PITTS, two industrious young merchants. The farming lands adjoining Newton are similar to all Newton county land, which is said to be the best in middle Georgia. The soil is of a dark color, and suitable for corn, cotton, peas, potatoes, wheat, oats and in fact anything which will grow in this state. This Newton town, has also a good hotel in the Stanton House, a dentist doing a good business, and two blacksmith and repair establishments. The people are noted for their intelligence and hospitality, and the stranger or visitor is soon at home among its refined clever people.
