Charleston gave royal welcome to the 35,000 visitors and veterans and the city is beaming with Southern hospitality. Thousands were going on every train, and every hotel boarding house and every room to rent has been let. It is probable that the churches and other public buildings will throw open their doors to the visitors. The first session of the reunion was held on May 10th in the Reunion Auditorium, which was dedicated last night. The auditorium seats 7,500 people and several thousand were turned away. General Gordon was escorted to the chair by General Moorman, chief of staff and Gen. C. J. Walker commanding the South Carolina division. General Walker called the audience to order the secession assembly of 1860. Dr. J. Wm. Jones chaplain, led in prayer, invoking God’s blessings on the white haired veterans, and pleading for universal peace and good will. Hon. F. B. Gray, Speaker of the South Carolina House of Representatives, read the resolution of welcome from the general assembly. Governor Ellerbe wired that he could not attend the reunion on account of illness. In the absence of the governor, the address of welcome was delivered by Lt. Gov. McSweeney. Mayor J. Adger Smyth delivered the address of welcome for the veterans of South Carolina and Charleston as the cradle of secession brought forth the rebel yell from ten thousand throats. the yell was caught up by the crowd outside and passed along for blocks. At noon Mr. Walker introduced General Gordon, commander in chief. No man ever received such an enthusiastic demonstration. The audience rose at the mention of his name and for several minutes shouted like mad. Hats were thrown in the air and the bands played Dixie furiously. Every sentence of his speech was applauded. Gen. Gordon was in excellent voice and was fired by enthusiasm and patriotism. Gen John B. Gordon, commander-in-chief, Generals C. A. Evans, Stephen D. Lee, Wade Hamton and many other distinguished officers are present.
