TO WORK FOR THE ELECTION OF SMITH

COVINGTON, Ga. -- Aug 15. --  Gum Creek district of Newton county has organized 
a Hoke Smith Club.  Following is a petition that was circulated.
GUM CREEK ORGANIZES.
We, the undersigned citizens of Gum Creek militia district of Newton county, 
Georgia, do hereby organize ourselves as a Hoke Smith Club, for the purpose of 
promoting the interests of the white people of the state during the pending 
campaign.
The ????? of the club shall be ???? promotion of good government and ????? 
politics, as espoused by the Hon. Hoke Smith ?? opposition to railroad 
domination of the political affairs of our state.
We pledge ourselves to do everything in our power to aid in bringing about the 
nomination of Hon. Hoke Smith for the office of governor of our state, and to 
help him in the great work of purifying state politics, and establishing a 
state government of and by the people.

Gentlemen from four-fifths of my neighbors signed for our standard bearer, Hoke 
Smith.  Please tell him I have worked very hard for him.  I know that I have 
turned several of my neighbors and I do hope he will sweep the state for white 
supremacy. I can't understand why all our race don't look at this fight as I 
do.  Yes, may God guard him and protect him and shower upon him every blessing, 
is my prayer.  Tell him when time presents to write me a few words.
