J. Walden, who lived in Rockdale county, came to Covington Saturday and left for home that night, but was found Sunday morning in an insensible condition. Dr. Griffen, of Covington, went to see him and did all in his power to restore him to consciousness, but at 11 o'clock on Sunday night, he breathed his last, froze to death. His wife was sent for and was present when he died. On Monday Coroner McCord summoned a jury and held an inquest over the body, the verdict being that Mr. Walden froze to death. It appears that he left here very drunk and went as far as the old Henderson place one mile beyond Brown's bridge. He was then riding a horse and leading a mule. He asked the distance to a certain place, and when told it was several miles, he replied that he could not go that far without more whiskey and would return to Covington and get a fresh supply. He came back as far as the Hendrick place, this side of the river, where he must have fallen from his horse, as the mule and the horse came on to town, and a colored man saw Mr. Walden lying in the road Sunday morning. He was carried to the home of Mr. Thompson, who lives near by, and it was there that he died. As the midnight moon threw its soft beams upon the cold and frozen body of poor Jack Walden there was one more widow and five more orphan children made sad and desolate by that hellish demon DRINK.
