News reached the city early Monday morning of the killing of Mr. T. C. Goosby at his home near Leguin by his stepson, Mr. V. H. G. Goolsby. From the evidence at the coroners inquest the difficulty began over the fact that another stepson owed him $1.25 and the old gentleman got wrathy about it and threatened to have him placed in jail, whereupon the mother of the young man asked him not to do it. This seemed to enrage him and he went to the mantle piece and picked up his pistol with which he began to beat his wife over the head, kick her about and otherwise make things warm. Mr. V. H. G. Goolsby came in and tried to stop him from abusing his mother and Mr. Goolsby attempted to shoot him, whereupon upon the other man secured a shotgun and emptied the contents in him, the entire load entering his body just above the heart. Coroner Levy went down and held the inquest and the verdict of the jury was that Mr. Goolsby came to his death at the hands of his stepson and that the young man was justifiable in the act, he having done it in the preservation of his own life and that of his mother. Mr. Levy states that the young man impressed him very forcibly and that he was not in the least excited, but regretted that he had to kill the old gentleman.
