Stewart was stabbed to death by Mr. Sanders McDaniel, at which time his father, Mr. Henry McDaniel, was engaged in a dispute with Mr. Stewart. It appears that the trouble arose over a fence the McDaniels claimed that Stewart was building on their land. It is said that they had not been on friendly terms for many years. The Coroner went out Monday night and an inquest was held. The evidence showed that the Elder McDaniel had gone to Mr. Stewart replied that he was putting it exactly on the line as laid off by the survey. McDaniel then left and went after his son Sanders who came back and the dispute was renewed, a fight ensued in which Mr. Stewart was stabbed to death, and the two McDaniels hurt about the head, said to have been hit several times with a monkey wrench. The verdict of the jury was to the effect that Mr. Stewart was killed by Mr. Sanders McDaniel, and that Mr. Henry McDaniel, his father, was accessory, and that the crime was murder. Sheriff Wright hurried to the scene and arrested the McDaniels, bringing them to town Tuesday morning. The preliminary trial is set for Wednesday, 29th, but we are forced to print our paper before the investigation is completed. This deplorable affair has brought gloom and sorrow to the hearts and homes of many people in Newton county. Mr. Stewart was a useful citizen, a good and true man; honest industrious and warm hearted, and his tragic and untimely death will be lamented by all who knew him. He leaves a wife, a baby boy, and many dear ones to mourn his sad death and cherish his precious memory. All of the parties live in Rocky Plains district, and resided near each other, and it is said were members of Hopewell church. The killing will undergo a thorough legal investigation, and therefore, we deem it best not to indulge in any sensational or imtemperate comments upon the unfortunate affair, further than to give a brief account of it.
