It May Be Different As Others Saw It" He Says of 3d Regiment, Company H. BEGINNING WITH THE YEAR 1861 February, 1863 4.....Snow increased to 8 inches deep. Lots of fun. 5.....Snowed again some. 6.....Sun rose clear. Snow balling with the girls. 7.....Bright and clear, commenced thawing some. Several went out on scout. Me and Lieut. HODGE came and _____ _____ _____ _____. 8.....Snow melting fast. Got orders to go to Morganton, in Fannin county, 19 miles from Blairsville. 9.....We went to Morganton, Got there at 3 o'clock in the evening and part put up in the court house, _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ house. 10....Sent a squad to Duck Town in Tennessee, 16 miles from Morganton. 11....The scout returned with a few prisoners. 12....I went after forage with wagons to Dickys. Got 16 bushels corn, saw lots of wild turkeys in wood and thousands of pigeons. 13....H. A. B. WELDEN left us for the railroad. HARRISON WOODRUFF came to us from Dahlonega after GEORGE ESTES to go to Dahlonega. His brother was about to die and did die. Sent out scout to arrest FAIN, but they could not find him. He was a man of considerable notoriety. 14....A Lieut. from the Army made a speech in the court house. The woman came in from all sections. The house was full. 15....I was taken sick and it was a rainy day. 16....I was bad off with the gravel. 17....I was past traveling about. 18....I was carried to Morris hotel on a chair. 19....I went to taking medicine from and old crazy negro, who was deformed. Dr. MOORE said I would not live until morning, that was it, impossible for me to live through the night. I thought I would. The medicine was a simple thing but it done me good and if any one wishes to know, I will give it to them. Remedy Eggshells parched and ground in coffe mill as fine as the mill will grind them. Put in a vessel and pour hot water on them and leave to cool. Then take a tablespoonful every 2 hours and a teacup full of Hop Flower Tea. After taking it 3 times I got better during the night. GRIFFIN DRIGGERS staid with me. 20....We was ordered back to Dahlonega, but a scout was out and we had to wait for them to come back before we could go. 21....Sent off conscripts hand-cuffed to Dahlonega. it hailed in the morning and rained in the evening. The scout came in from Duck Town and North Carolina with prisoners. 22....Sent off 11 prisoners. Lieut. HODGE in command. Me and a few others of Co. B was left in Morganton. Thudered and rain, big storm at night. 23....Another scout went after WEBSTER, who had got away from the guard. 24....I rode out the first time after I was sick. Saw more wild pigeons than Carter had oats. I ran after some deserters but they soon got lost from me. We got orders for all to go to Dahlonega. Captain WATERS came and some of his men. 25....We started for Dahlonega, went as far as Mr. HUNT'S, who had a distillery and plenty of brands. He was then in Atlanta jail. I slept that night with GREEN WHEELER in wagon. We got plenty of apples, I went to the still house with the overseer of the place, had a good time. He told me all about the neighborhood and what they were doing, etc. 26....We got to Dahlonega in the evening, me and J. C. BOYD. I bought the largest sheepskin I most ever saw. 27....I went to Riley's hotel for that purpose and took dinner and to make out the pay rolls. They had been sent to me at Morganton, but I did not have the chance to make out well. The dinner that day I want to tell about. Peas and hog jowl that was red with rust and black peas that was eat up nearly with weevils. The jowl was 2 years old the peas brand. 28....Co. B was mustered for pay in the court house.
