BEGINNING WITH THE YEAR 1861 March, 1863 6.....Snowed again until the mountains was white. 7.....Election for 5th Sergt. and 7th Corpl. L _. _______ was elected Sergt. and JOSEPH MEADORS Corpl. Captain CAMP came to us, he had been home wounded at Limestone in Tennessee. 8.....Rained all day. 9.....Captain MARLOW'S men all left for home and J. Y. TINSLEY left for Atlanta. 10....Lieut. MEADORS was detailed to carry prisoners to Atlanta. He had _ men to go with him. We staid all night the first night at Graham's, 14 miles from Dahlonega. The roads very muddy. The prisoners were ______ and handcuffed. It was a trying time to them. 11....We passed through Cumming and went on to a school house off the road a little in the woods. 3 prisoners got away that night. We chained them all together by running the chain between their arms so they were strung. They sat around the fire. The hearth was in one solid piece of rock and they rubbed a link of the chain in two and had a excuse to go to the door. As they got there, they dropped the chain and three of them broke off in the woods. Some shots were fired at them but they escaped. We did not care if they did get away, they were no account for soldiers. The man that did not try to get away was named BLACKWELL. He had a sore arm caused by vaccination in that arm. 12....We crossed the Chattahoochee River at McAfee's bridge at 11 o'clock. Some Johnnies were at work on the road. We camped within 4 miles of Atlanta and took up a deserter and carried him on to Atlanta. 13....Got to Atlanta and turned the prisoners over to Col. LEE, who was in command there. We then drew rations and forage and started to Covington at 3 o'clock. Stopped at Mr. FOWLER'S and got supper and went on one mile below Conyers Station and stopped and took a nap of sleep. 14....Got to Covington a little after _______, got home at 11 o'clock. 15, 16, 17.... Visiting around promiscuously. 18....Went to Captain BAILEY'S to party and staid late. 19....We started for Greenville, Tenn., passed through Logansville. Me and LUMSDEN and AUSTIN staid all night at Mr. PLUMMER'S, 7 miles from Lawrenceville. 20....Got to Lawrenceville and waited for Lieut. MEADORS until 12 o'clock. We then went on. Me and LUMSDEN went on and staid all night with Capt. ROBERTS. His store house was robbed that night of brandy, 10 gallons, and whiskey. 1 barrel. It was done while it was raining. They came with ox cart and got it. 21....We passed through Gainseville, Hall Co., Me and LUMSDEN staid all night with JAMES MOSS, my uncle, 7- 1/2 miles from Gainsville. 22....Passed by Mossy Creek Camp Ground, stopped at MEADORS a while, passed through Clarkesville, Co. site of Habersham. Staid all night at ANDERSON'S near Clarkesville. 23....Passed through Clayton in Rabun Co. at 2 o'clock. Part of us went to ELIJAH THOMAS' and staid all night. Wrote a furlough for his son the next morning, etc, etc. 24....Passed through Franklin county site of Macon Co., N. C. And staid all night at Mr. SANDERS. There was an alarm that night, cause some women raised it. 25....Passed through Webster at 1 o'clock in Jackson Co., N. C., with Captain WILBAR, who treated us finely, me and DRIGGERS and WM. AUSTIN. 26....Went that day to J. B. COLES in Buncome Co., N C and staid all night. Good fare. 27....Crossed the French Broad River at Alexander's Bridge, passed on through Marshal, on to the Warm Springs and staid all night. 28....We passed Paint Rock and got 8 miles from Greenville and eat dinner. Me and J. MED SMITH got to Greenville at 5 o'clock. The Battalion was on dress parade when we got there. 29....Drew canteens and naversacks? and went on scout and staid all night in woods and took 2 prisoners. 30....Went to Chimney Top Mountains and took our dinner on top of the highest place we could find. We rolled rocks down the mountain and stopped a man who was plowing in a field. Our rocks knocked down over 40 pels of fence. He took his teatus? to the middle of the field. We slept in corner of fence that night and it rained abundantly on us. 31....We passed through Leesburg on to Jonesboro at 5 o'clock. Snow storm. We took Lieut. MURRAY and his squad prisoners with one indian and negro at mountain. They had been stealing horses. We put the Indian and negro in jail at Jonesboro. To Be Cont.
