We started after 3 o'clock and got there after dark. Lieut. MEADORS took 20 men and went about 2 miles and stood picket. Had an alarm caused by some of the infantry shooting. 19....The Infantry were cutting down trees, so as to have a fair chance with the Artillery. We had nothing to eat ourselves or our horses since leaving Carter's Station until late in the evening. We crossed the river over to a man's house by the name of KNAVE and he had the principle of a knave indeed. We had orders to report at 3 o'clock at a chruch at the mouth of Creek Stoney. We got a very good supper at KNAVE'S and our horses fed at a moderate price but him and the old lady and girls told some good ones after supper. We saddled up and he showed us a place to cross the river, said it was better than the place we crossed in coming over to his house. We crossed through the worst shoals and stones and dark as a cupboard, but go through after a while. So we met the rest at the church. As soon as all came up we went on up the creek with a guide to BROOKS barn and they left me to guard them. The rest all went, over the mountain afoot in the night. I was alarmed by something trying to get in at the large window where I was. I looked and thought I saw two guns at the window. I was about to fire, when I found out it was a large ox with long horns, trying to reach in so I said nothing to him. 29....The party that went over the mountain returned late in the evening with only one prisoner. Tremendous hail storm. The prisoner got away that night. Me and LEWIS and BRANNON and JOE MEADORS went to CRUMBLY'S and staid until nearly day and went out on scout until sun up and returned to CRUMBLY'S. To Be Cont.
