It May Be Different As Others Saw It" He Says of 3d Regiment, Company H. BEGINNING WITH THE YEAR 1861 April, 1863 30....We all went back to camp at Zollicoffer. May, 1863 1.....Capt. BAILEY came to camps and got me to write out discharge for W. H. WOODRUFF. He started to Jonesboro to go home, he having served out his enlistment, being under age. 2.....Commenced inspection of ______ ________. 3.....Ordered to drill every day. 4.....Co. B. was ordered to Bristol. 5.....Got to Bristol at 3 o'clock in the evening. 6.....Got the payrolls for Co. B. 7.....Commenced making out pay rolls at the Exchange Hotel in Lewis rooms. 8.....I went into Dr. JOHNSON'S room. It rained, so I could not finish them. 9.....I finished the payrolls and they were sent off but got lost or spoiled. 10, 11....We grazed our horses around and about the fields. 12....I went on guard in GOODSON LEWIS and LUMPKIN came up from Zollocofer on the hunt of whiskey. The Texas prisoners all left Bristol. Lumpkin lost payrolls for Co. B. 13....We drew corn for two days rations and sent guards out on all the roads to keep citizens from hauling provisions to salt works. 14....The guards brought in several wagon loads. 15....Me and JOE and BOB MEADORS went after witnesses. 16....GEORGE ESTES and B. F. CAMP came to camps. I finished making out payrolls the 2nd time. The reason I did not finish these before, Lewis tried to get some other _____ to make them out and they spoiled them. He would not release me from duty like Capt. L. did. He got me to do the Company's writing. As soon as he agreed to release me, I did it. 17....A Tennesseean by the name of MOORE came and joined our Co. B. by consent of Co. 18....He was mustered in service. 19....We went after two witnesses at a still house and fished some. 20....Co. B. was paid off. 21....Moved across the railroad near Fitzgerald on the old campground road. Staid there all night. 22....We moved to Blue Spring at Whitaker, 1- 1/2 miles from Bristol. N. J. SKINNER came to camp. 23....Wrote a letter for JOE MEADORS to his Dilsey. 24....MAT BARBER came to camps. 25....Got orders to send all the tents to Jonesboro. Heard they were fighting at Big Creek Gap and Cumberland Gap. JAMES JOHNSON came to Bristol to find out about his boys who were dead. 26....Me and BEN CAMP went a fishing in mill pond, caught a good many suckers. There was a detail made to bury the dead that was sent on trains and could go no further. 27....We buried dead that was killed at the Fredericksburg fight. JAMES JOHNSON went home. 28....Captain BAILEY received his discharge all right or rather a resignation. He came to camp and treated and left for home. MAT BARBER got his discharge the 27th instant and he left for home. He put in JOHN GORMAN, his substitute. Was to take effect the first of June. 29....W. H. WOODRUFF came to camps. 30....Got a letter from Capt. BAILEY that Captain ALLEN wanted a clerk and BAILEY recommended me as competent for the place. 31....Rained all day and been for several days. June, 1863 1.....Lieut. LEWIS go back from Zollicofer and I wrote out a discharge for J. M. WOODRUFF, being he had put in a substitute, his son, W. H. WOODRUFF. 2.....Got a letter from Captain BAILEY that he would come back if he could get his former position as Captain of Co. B. 3, 4....Went to South fork of the Holstein river fishing. 5.6....Lay in camps all day waiting for orders. 7.....Wrote a letter to Captain BAILEY. WILLIAM ELLIOTT'S wife came to camps. She boarded at Boohers. 8, 9, 10....Playing town ball every evening. 11....Me and WOODRUFF, CAMP and MARRETT went fishing to South fork of Hostein. Came back and got a letter from Captain ALLEN ordering me to report to him on the next train to Zollicofer for duty as assistant to him if I would accept of the position. To Be Continued.
