It May Be Different As Others Saw It" He Says of 3d Regiment, Company H. BEGINNING WITH THE YEAR 1861 June 1863 12....Lieut. HODGE came to camps at night and Capt. ALLEN to Bristol got news that the Yanks had taken Leonora Station and Cummels Station and they were over the mountains making for the salt works, two brigades of them. 14....Lay in BOOKER'S barn all day. Raining. 15....I went to Zollicofer to carry Whiskey to Captain ALLEN. Got there after dark. Went to a hotel and staid all night. 16....I went to Captain ALLEN'S headquarters and he went off to Brountville to be gone a day or so and left me to attend to his business. I told him I must go back to Bristol in the evening. I made out a few requisitions and went back to Bristol on the train. 17....BENJAMIN LOLLIS was mustered into Co. B. 18....Wrote a transfer for THOMPSON. 19....Lieut. LEWIS got a letter from General JACKSON at Jonesboro to take command of Co. B by promotion to Captain. 20....More news about the Yankees had taken Leonora Station and that General BUCKUR was leaving Knoxville. He had been whipped at Knoxville. 21....We heard our forces had been whipped at Srawberry Plains on the Holstein River. 22....Col. NIX came to camp and sent J. Y. TINSLEY to stand guard in my place and or me to come to camp at Blue Spring, but we was out at Col. DUMAS. We fell back at night near our old camps. 23....We got some sweet milk that made us all sick that drank of it. 24....Rained all day and part of us stayed in BOOKER'S barn and boarded at his house all day. 25....A guard came after BEN LOLLIS and took him to his command. 26....I was on guard at commissary. Letters commenced passing through to the burnt bridges at Zollicofer and Carter's Station on trains running that far. 27....Election for 2nd Lieut. and 4th Sergt. and 2nd Sergt. THOMAS J. SPEER was elected 2nd Lieutenant. W. T. ELLIOTT was elected 2nd Sergeant. McD. HENDERSON was elected 4th Sergeant. 28....Had a game of town ball. 29....Was on guard at the Tennessee depot, guarding whiskey which was to go to Atlanta. 30....Mustered for pay. JOHN PATTERSON was elected 4th Corpl. July 1863 1.....Me and E. P. MARRETT went after mulberries at creek. Lots of them. 2.....Commenced making out payrolls at the Exchange Hotel. 3.....Finished making them out and went to have them signed by all present. 4.....A lot of us went in a bathing. Got a letter from Sister NANCY WOODRUFF. 5.....Sunday. A lot of boys went to Paperville to a singing by Captain EKRIDGE, alias DRIGGERS. 6....BRANAN and EDMOND started to Atlanta to guard a train of whiskey for the government (viz. officers). The boys made a raid the night before they got off with it, going under the cars while the guard was on top and boring auger holes up though into the barrels and sitting wash tubs under and buckets to catch it. Blue buckets and canteens were in demand. It was a case of emergency. 7. Col. WINN came to camps to investigate about how LEWIS IX, got to be captain without promotion, when it was understood by the company that vacancies for commissioned officers was to be filled by election. 8.....Had orders to go to Zollicofer but did not get off. 9.....We went to Zollicofer and got there before dinner time and went into camps. 10....We went out to pasture our horses at Jake Ranger's on the Wautauga river. 11....Capt. LEWIS went and took a squad out to Stony Creek after bushwhackers. 12....WILLIAMS and GALLOWAY went to Carters Station. 13....Capt. LEWIS returned after scouting. 14....Sergeant ELLIOTT was sent to Bristol after and to carry mail.
