It May Be Different As Others Saw It" He Says of 3d Regiment, Company H. BEGINNING WITH THE YEAR 1861 July, 1863 15....Got orders to go to Zollicofer. We got there before night and went in camp before the bridge. I got a letter from M. A. M. 16....Made out a requisition for clothing, had our horses shod and went in a bathing river. 17....Some of the infantry had a horse race. 18....Started for Reedy Creek Camp Ground, passed through Blountville. 19....A squad went to Moccasin Gap to pickett. We had a kettle of apples. 20....We got rations from Zollicofer, the first we had in three days. Had a false alarm in camp, caused by SHEPHERD and WILLIAMS getting wheat to feed on. It was a fixed up job on SHEPHERD. He went after wheat and ROD WILLIAMS with him. SHEPHERD said he would stick to him and we had a man to watch, and when they commenced getting wheat they were fired on, and WILLIAMS dropped and SHEPHERD ran and came to camp and had a good tale to tell. WILLIAMS came in and got in his tent and SHEPHERD tore off his shirt tail to bind up WILLIAMS. He was groaning considerable. SHEPHERD apologizing for leaving him as he did. 21....Rainy, had to stay in camp all day. 22....Put out pickett in Gap. 23....Capt. ALLEN and Maj. CLARK came to camps. 24....Sent wagons to Zollicofer after corn. 25....Wagons returned and no corn. 26....Meeting at the Academy. 27....Got orders to go to War Gap, to pickett about 10 miles from Rogersville, in Hawkins Co. We staid all night at a widow woman's barn. Her house was brick and had been built 52 years. 28....Got to Gap and camped in Cuney Creek church. 29....Lieut. HODGE came to us from Zollicofer. 30....We went after oats and JEFF TINSLEY came from Bristol and the wagons started to Bristol after rations. 31....Sent a squad under Lieut. MEADORS to stand pickett guard all the time. Agreeing to do so, they went 14 miles and had a good time, got plenty of beans, and butter and milk. August, 1863 1.....J. Y. TINSLEY started to Zollicofer after mail. I went on scout after renegades. 2....The wagons got back with rations. 3.....B. F. CAMP started home on furlough. 4.....Me and Lieut. MEADORS went to pickett post after butter and chickens. We got 6 lbs. butter, $1.00 per pound, chickens, 75 cents a piece. We got 6 of them. 5.....We got some apples and beans and dumplings. It was a old time dinner. 6.....Capt. Lewis got back from Bistol. Old man MEADORS and BEN SMITH and STEPHEN GLASS came to us at camp at Caney Creek church in a Dunkard Settlement. They had a church close by and it was their harvest meeting time. We got letters from home. J. Y. TINSLEY and others started home on detail for horses. Several of the boys went. 7.....Several of the boys went on Devil Nose Mountain. 8.....Big meeting at Dunkard Church. 9.....Preaching at our camp by Revd. POLK. We cleaned up the church and put on our best clothes. 10....MEADORS, SMITH and GLASS started back home. My jaw was terribly swollen from tooth ache. 11....My upper jaw bursted and then my lower jaw rose. Wagons got back from Bristol. 12....McCOLE got back from Bristol or from Capt. LEWIS. Started to Zollicofer after money to pay off Co. B. 13....Me and MID SMITH went to hunt forage for the Battalion. We stopped at the yellow store and go dinner, paid one dollar each. 14....We go some mail from Bristol. 15....Capt. LEWIS got back from Zollicofer. 16....Lieut. SPEER got back from Bristol. He went after horse shoes and rations for Co. B. 17....Commenced making out payrolls for Co. B. Lieut MEADORS went to draw saddles and clothing for Co. B. 18....The boys all signed the payrolls. 19....I went to picket post at War Gap. The pickets were very much excited, they thought we were surrounded. 20....Capt. LEWIS went the second time after money. 21....BEN CAMP got back from home and brought me some jewelry. 22....Me and MED SMITH went to ASBURY GILLINGWATERS after tomatoes, to some fine ones.
