Lieut. Col Bean was in command. We had some fun with the powder we took out of the caison in the creek bursting trees, logs and anything that was hollow. We rode all night of the 6th. 7.....We got to Kingsport and camped on Island. 8.....Lay about all day sleeping and resting up. 9.....Snowed some. We left the Island and went to Shipley's Ferry and camped on YOAKLEY'S farm, and a very large farm. 10....Left YOAKLEY'S and went to BOND'S camp ground and camped. We took up quarters, or some did, in the tents. 11....All the officers nearly put up in ten; in camp ground, part of Co. B. camped out. H. H. ARMSTRONG started home on furlough, he was arrested and brought back. His furlough was dated for the 14th, the cause of his not passing out. 12....Co. B on picket at the river. 13....H. B. MEADORS went after mail at Abingdon. 14....ARMSTRONG, of Co B, and HERBERT, of Co A., started home on furloughs. A scout of 100 men started to Jonesboro. BENNET WADKINS came to us. 15....Rainey all day. We that would not go into the camp ground built shelters to stay under. 16....Scouting party returned. Heavy firing towards Knoxville. 17....Me and JOHN BRIDGES went squirrel hunting. We killed some good fox, squirrels and gray. 18, 19....We lay around eating walnuts, plenty of them. 20....Captain LEWIS went to old man BOND'S, sick, to stay until he got well. We left for Rogersville. 21....We got below Kingsport and camped. 22....We passed through Rogersville and out by the Female College. Went 2 miles and camped. 23....We came back through Rogersville and took the Knoxville road and went a piece and took another road towards Clinch Mountain and camped near Cloud's Ferry on river. 24....The pickets commenced firing soon in the morning and we of the 16th Ga. dismounted and went up the mountain near the ferry and we fired on them and fell back down the river to our horses, and then took down the river towards Bean Station road, and camped and fed our horses. Hardly anything to eat ourselves. 25....We crossed the Kentucky Gap on the Clinch Mountain and went out on the river 10 miles from Rogersville, close to Prophitt's and camped for the night. The wagons came to us. 26...We passed through Rutledge and camped for the night. No bread to eat and but little poor beef. 27....We heard the firing towards Knoxville when we was 25 miles off. We hurried on but stopped to get two days forage, but only got two feeds of corn and packed it to within three miles of Knoxville. The Yanks were out on a scout, the 1st Tennessee charged them and drove them back. To be continued. This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 4.2 Kb
