We went to Branch's mill and got flour, and then on to Fall Branch. Came back two miles and camped for the night. 2.....We started for Fall Branch again and run up with the pickets and drove them two miles to Crouch Town, and then fell back within 7 miles of Jonesboro and camped. The men were 100 days men that we were after and were camped at Bay Mountain. Some of us went the night before nearly over their heads and took a look at them. We could have rolled rocks down on them. We saw their situation, but we left our horses too far off to fool with them, as there were to many of them for us and they were pretty well fortified in their front, the only access to them unless we had more men. 3.....We heard Captain ARNOLD was falling back and the Yanks were advancing. We came to Jonesboro. Me and John Lewis went on scout with a Tennesseean to hunt up some guns. We got 8 guns, a few blankets and ____ ______ _______ and went back to Jonesboro and camped. We found a still house. 4.....We heard the Yanks had camped this side of Greensville. Ordered out at sun down. I had to stay all night at Jonesboro with my horse, which was unable to travel. 5.....I went out and gathered May apples. Lots of them round about Jonesboro. Part of the scouts got back and had found the Yanks at or near Greenville. 6.....I went to the command 2 and 3/4 miles below Jonesboro on the Leesburg road at Camel Hill. We went after forage. BILL PARKER came to us. 7.....Me and DOC CORNWELL went and gathered May apples. We then went to a barn and staid all night. We had some fun with the old lady and the girls. I played off on DOC, etc. 8.....Rained all day and night. At 11 o'clock we got orders to be in Jonesboro at 12 o'clock. We hurried up and it pouring down rain. We went through Broilesville just before day. We had taken the wrong road and went back near Jonesboro before we got right. 9.....We overtook Major SMITH after we crossed the Chuckey river. We rode 28 miles to get 16 miles. General JOHN MORGAN came to Jonesboro and went to Rhea town. We went to PRESNON'S a rich old Union man and fed most of the boys and got dinner. We went on to within three miles of Jonesboro, on the Limestone road, and the road to Coledge. 10....We went back to Jonesboro and then to our old camp at Camel Hill. Drew some oats at tan yard. I was on picket at night. 11....Found horse shoes and nails at a mill. Flag of truce started yesterday at Morristown. 12....Major SMITH took 11 picket men from the 16th Georgia to go with him to Newport or rather his old home. There were a few Tennesseeans along. 13....Broke my knife working on powder horn. Part of new company came to us. I was on picket. Got roasting ears to eat near picket post. 14....I came off picket in the morning. Rained all evening. 15....Got orders to go to Greasy Cove, 13 and 1/2 miles from Jonesboro. Left at day light and got to Greasy Cove after dinner sometime. Col. LILLIARD was in command. We run the bushwhackers from their houses on Rocky Creek. Our Co. B., staid at night at Mrs. MACENTURF'S on picket all night. We got some beef from her that had maggots in it, and they were dropping down all night from up stairs, where the beef was. Some of the boys lay with their heads in a closet, the maggots falling on them all night. 16....We remained on picket all day. Some of the boys stole the old lady's dress or two to make pocket handkerchiefs and to patch their shirts. 17....Me and JOHN LEWIS moved over the creek and camped in a blacksmith shop close to creek. It had no floor in it. In the night we got roasting ears and cooked them in a pot for supper. 18....We moved up Indian Creek. Part of Co. B staid in a house, which was an old one, and in the night somebody pushed the chimney down on my feet and covered my palet over with rocks and dirt. We supposed they were bushwhackers. My feet and ankles pretty badly hurt. 19....Got orders to go to Greenville. We moved out to iron works and staid all night at the widow WRIGHT'S. 20....We passed Fuller's depot and Greenville and went to Evans cross roads and camped for the night. 21....We moved back. Col. GILTNER was fighting the Yanks at Blue Spring. He was whipped out of Bull's Gap the day before. I started with the wagons with a lame horse belonging to DAY. Our battalion was cut off, but got through and came to Greenville. 22....We got to Jonesboro at day break. Col. BRADFORD was in command and was always falling back.
