BEGINNING WITH THE YEAR 1861 August, 1864 29....________ went after forage but found it scarce. 30....I sent a pistol by HORTON to GROSS to have it stocked. 31....MOSELEY shot a large dog in the night that had been eating our meat out of a big pot, and broke both fore legs. The next morning the owner of the dog came to camp to have a row. He and his son became rather boisterous. HORTON told him if he did not leave he would fare like his dog, and he went home and turned off two sick soldiers that were sta ying at his house. A Tennessee Lieutenant killed the dog with a pistol. September, 1864 1.....Powerful hard rain. Everything wet and mad. 2.....Went to ELLISON'S after peaches. 3.....Went to JOHN KING'S after forage. 4.....We started to Greenville with Major TOOLE. When we got near Jonesboro we heard they were fighting and falling back, and MORGAN was killed at Greenville. We hurried on. At Camel's Hill we met the 16th Tennessee and artillery. So we were ordered forward to meet the Yanks. We stopped a while at Leesburg and got forage and me and BRIDGES of Co. B and COOPER of Co. A were detailed as carriers to report to Col. LILLARDS headquarters. We staid nearly all night before we were sent off. We got back at daylight and they had lain in line of battle all night, so we carriers laid down in an apple orchard and took a nap of sleep. 5.....Had an alarm caused by some of the pickets shooting off their wet guns. Col. LILLARD sent us carriers to our command on the road to Broilsville. The remains of General MORGAN came to Jonesboro by flag of truce, and was sent on to Abingdon, Va. 6.....We moved to school house 5 miles from Duvald's Ford and camped. 7......Moved out on Blountville road and camped close to Beard's. 8.....We got oats from BEARD. 9.....Had a bad rising under my arm and Lieut. MEADORS lanced it for me. 10....Went after forage and found it pretty scarce. 11....Had bad risings under both arms. Was not able to ride. 12....Took the number of guns. 13....Captain ARNOLD of the 12th Battalion Tennessee had inspection of arms, and took the number of arms pistols and sabres wanted. He wanted every man to have pistols. 14....Inspection of the 16th Georgia Battalion. Heard Major E. Y. CLARK would be at camp by 12 o'clock today from Georgia. He came and then we moved out in the direction of Kingsport 4 and 1/2 miles and had an alarm just as we got our saddles off, caused by some citizens reporting the Yanks close by. They didn't want us to camp there. The boys made some of them hustle,and their bee gums suffererd. 15....We drew corn and orders were read that we must quit foraging promiscuously. 16....Went after 2 miles and got plenty. 17....Col. S. J. WINN came to our camps. 18....Got orders to be ready to march at a moment's warning. Saddled all night. 19....Started just before day and got to Jonesboro and drew some clothes; enough to clothe 3 to the company. 20....Went below Rhea Town, fed and camped for the night. 21....We moved on through Greenville and Blue Ridge and had a skirmish at Lick Creek Captured three and killed one. We then fell back to Blue Spring to try to draw them out of Bull's Gap. We had made arrangements to cut them off if they came out of Gap, but they would not come out. We camped at the old battle ground. I slept in the same corner of the fence I took a stand in on the 10th of October 1863. We were ordered to saddle up before we lay down. 22....We remained saddled all day. Shot off our guns. We went to building fortifications for the artillery. We had a skirmish at Lick Creek Bridge. We fell back again to or near Blue Springs. 23....Co. B. moved on the extreme left wing and cut down trees and made obstructions to fight behind. 24....Ordered away in the evening. Heard they were flanking us. Went to Greenville and camped near College Hill. 25....In camps until evening had alarm. The pickets were fighting and all the troops went out but the 16th Ga. We were held in reserve but our troops run them back several miles. 26....We left our camps at sun up for Jonesboro. Passed through Rhea Town and Limestone. There we came up with Col. DUKE'S brigade, and part of Gen. WILLIAM'S men. We passed on through Broilsville, and Jonesboro and camped 6 miles from Jonesboro on Duvald's Ford road. 27...Moved half mile and camped at Spring.
