It May Be Different As Others Saw It" He Says of 3d Regiment, Company H. BEGINNING WITH THE YEAR 1861 September, 1864 28....We were ordered to Jonesboro, the Yanks were there. We got to forks of road and stopped and staid there a while, and went back to camps and staid until day and eat something. 29....We moved to and crossed Duvald's Ford and camped at church. We went after forage and just as we got back the pickets were driven in and Lieut. HOWELL of Co. A. was killed. We rushed to the ford and kept them from crossing and lay on top of hill all night. 30....The Yanks came and attacked us again. Gen. DUKE came to our assistance and took 50 men from the 16th Ga., and 50 of his men and went to ______ Ford. _____ ____ and attempted to flank them by charging ______. They captured 12 men and wounded some. Only one wounded on _______. BENETT REYNOLDS, of Co A., 16th Ga., was shot in the thigh. The artillery was thundering away at Carter's Station above us all the evening. We drove them back at the ford some 6 or 7 miles and we came back and camped for the night. October, 1864 1.....The artillery commenced at daylight at Carter's Station. All quiet at the Ford until 10 o'clock. We were ordered to Saltworks, in Virginia. We ____ Zolicofter before sundown. The whole of the troops were ordered to the Saltworks. We camped at or near Paperville for the night. 2.....We left camp and passed through Paperville. Left Bristol to our ____ and passed through Abingdon, Va. A courier came from Saltworks for _____ _____ hurry ______, the Yanks were within 1 and 1/2 miles of Saltworks, and then we were 17 miles away, so we trotted and loped our horses until dark. Was 8 miles off and we got there at 7 o'clock and camped in meadow close to Saltworks. Could see the Yanks fires all around on the hills. The railroad ran an engine out towards Glade Springs very easy and then came back _____ and snorting and the soldiers would yell at a fearful rate pretended that they were reinforcing, and it had the desired effect as the Yanks started leaving that night. 3.....Gen. VAUGHN'S brigade was to charge them in the morning as soon as Col. WITCHER and GILTNER attacked them, but when WITCHER and GILTNER were out _______ they were most all gone but the pickets. They followed them, or _____ ______ and a good many negroes caught fits in their retreats. WITCHER'S _____ showed the negroes no quarters. They captured a good many prisoner's _______. General VAUGHN'S Brigade was ordered to go back toward Bristol. We started at 12 o'clock for Abingdon. We got there after dark. The _____ were all illuminated; so glad the salt works were saved. We went to camp across the railroad on a high hill. 4.....We moved on toward Bristol and camped in woods near Preston's farm. 5.....Passed through Bristol and stopped to rest on the road from Zollicoffer and Blountsville close to Thomas' mill. Heard the Yanks were at the mouth of Beaver Dam Creek. 2 and 1/2 miles from mill. We camped 3-4 mile from the ______ and had an alarm after dark, caused by the citizens misrpresenting. 6....._____ in camps all day. Shot off our guns at 12 o'clock to reload. 7.....Ordered to Duvald's Ford. Started about 1 o'clock. Got within 1 and 3/4 miles and camped. 8.....Me and ALBERT WILLIAMS went to Dyer's to see horse left there. We got ______ breakfast and the horse was not well enough to take away. Sent a _____ out from the 4th squadron to Leesburg. 9.....Got orders to march next day at 12 o'clock towards Nashville. Nineteen men left for Georgia. 10....Lieut. HODGE took 20 men to go after the runaways. The balance of command went on through Jonesboro to Telleford's depot and camped on the battle ground. 11....Col. CARTER took 100 picked men and marched out in an old field and Gen. VAUGHN made us a speech and told us we were to undertake important duty and rather dangerous, but we had an officer who would take _____ right if we would stick to him. We were to go in the rear of Greenville and in the morning he would stick to him. We were to go in the rear of Greenville and in the morning he would come down on the other side of Greenville and attack them in front. So we started off in a trot and some times ____ our horses. We crossed the Chucky River and on until 10 o'clock at night and stopped and fed, and sent a scout to find out where we were. They ______ and reported that we were clear below Greenville and the Yanks, and that they had pickets at Bird's Bridge between us and Greenville. We held back and rode slow, so as to get to Bird's Bridge by daylight. 12....We crossed the bridge and run the pickets in, and charged their camps ____ ___ their breakfast, but some of it was burnt, as they left it on the fire ______. They had plenty of cakes and pies, some nice spare ribs, etc. We _____ them about three miles and waited for General VAUGHN to come up on the other side of Greenville. While waiting they charged us but we drove back into Greenville. When we heard Gen. VAUGHN'S artillery begin _____ on them, we charged and they were perfectly demoralized. We had ______ there to Lick Creek, 14 miles. It was a general stampede. We captured a good many of them, but there were not many killed or wounded. We found several horses but they were to poor to use. We went back to Rhea Town and camped. It was the Brownlow Regiment mostly that we stampeded. 13....We moved between Rhea Town and Limestone and camped. 14....R. L. WILLIAMS got his transfer to Ashby's Cavalry in Georgia, the 2nd Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry, Ashby Brigade. 15....Lieut. KEY went with the dismounted men to Rhea Town to fortify. 16....Preaching in the camps by the Rev. ROBERSON. Heard the Yanks were ______. 17....NEWTON SKINNER left us to Swadley's Tan Yard to shoe make with _____ WELCH. News came about 12 o'clock that the Yanks had driven in our _______. 18....General inspection of arms and review. Started on scout. Heard the Yanks had all left Bulls Gap toward Knoxville.
