James W. Anderson is a great advocate of “home missions,” and as soon as he heard of Henry Grady’s effort to establish a Confederate Soldier’s Home, in Georgia, the fires of patriotism were kindled anew in his warm heart. He knocked the ashes from his cigar, run his hand up to the elbow in his breeches pocket, brought forth a ten dollar note that had been hid there for hard times, and headed a subscription paper with that amount for this most worthy object. He then securing additional subscriptions and intends to keep the list open until everybody can have an opportunity to give something. It is not often that we take our hat off to a country editor, but in this instance we lift our old “Last year’s straw,” high in the air, and with out-stretched hand exclaim, “Put it there, brother. Well done thou good and faithful servant. May you dwell long in the land, and may health, peace and plenty ever bless thyself and thy household.” Below is a list of those who freely and gladly responded in the call made by Col. Anderson, and what we have said in praise of his public work applies with equal force and is so intended, for each and every individual contributor.
