M. T. Bower as secretary. ~Doctor Nolen, our worthy Coroner, says there is no sickness of importance in the lower part of the county. ~Col. Spearman, Constable Phillips and Merchant Shepherd, of Social Circle, spent Tuesday here. ~Sam Small is one of the most fascinating speakers of the age. Music Hall Thursday night, 21st. ~Mr. Charles E. Bowden, of Griffin, has moved to Newton County, and will probably make his home in Covington. ~Rev. J. M. Owens, of Acworth, has been on a visit to friends here this week. He was looking exceedingly well and has been, and is yet doing good and faithful service for the church and for the Master. ~Hon. T. J. Speer, our worthy representative in the legislature, spent a day or two of this week shaking hands with his many friends here. During his sojourn in town he was the guest of his daughter Mrs. Lee Adams. ~Rev. Sam W. Small will deliver a public lecture at Music Hall, Thursday night, March 21st, Subject: “From the Bar Room to the Pulpit.” One half of the proceeds will be given to the Parsonage committee. ~Our Mayor has treated himself to a new suit of tailor made clothes. He also has new hat, shoes, socks, etc. High license, strict regulations, street railroad, iron bridge, public schools and a Mayor with a new suit of clothes is not found in every town in Georgia the size of ours. Slowly, but surely, Covington is “getting there.” ~Miss Tott, the little three year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Heard, has been near death’s door all of this week, and while there is now some hope of her recovery she is yet in a critical condition. May the Master spare little Tott to her devoted parents for many years to come. The sympathy of his entire community is with Mr. and Mrs. Heard during the sickness of their darling child. ~His Honor, Judge Boynton, presided in Washington County Superior court last week, but was promptly on hand at Newton Court Monday. His charge here to the grand jury was more elaborate and pointed than usual. Few, if any, better superior court Judges can be found anywhere than is this able jurist and deservedly popular man. It is always a pleasure to converse with the Judge for he is social, jovial and well informed on all live questions. ~Tax Collector A. H. S. Davis is proving himself to be a public benefactor during his leisure moments. Monday night we visited Music Hall to see his writing school class, numbering some 30 scholars or more. Young men, boys and married men were at their desks learning this most desirable and useful art. Mr. Davis turns no worthy person from his door, but generously gives his time and attention to all who apply. He is one of the finest penmen in the land and deserves to be encouraged and patronized by the public.
