Everybody invited. ~Our old friend JEFF FINCHER, has moved from Newton Factory to Worthville, Butts County. ~Mr. R. U. THOMASON has opened a first-class gilt-edge bank in the live city of Madison. ~Our friend and fellow-citizen, Mr. THOMAS P. TAYLOR, has been re-elected on the Atlanta Police force. Good Luck Tom. ~Mrs. A. B. CONYERS, one of the best ladies in the land, has returned from an extended visit to Pensacola Fla., and is in good health. ~Mrs. HARRY CAMP has been quite sick at her husband’s home near the depot, for several days past. We hope this good and noble lady will soon be restored to health again. ~The prohibition address, delivered at the court house Tuesday, by Dr. W. A. Candler, was one of the best and most powerful speeches of the kind ever heard in the county. ~Col. A. D. MEADORS and wife, have moved from Anniston, Ala., to Newton County, Ga. Col. Meadors will practice law and have his office in Covington. ~Rev. MILES DILLARD, of Eatonton, spent a day and night here last week. He is one of the most active and eloquent ministers in the North Georgia Conference. While here he was the guest of Presiding Elder BIGHAM. ~Our old friend, Mr. MICK W. DAVIS, now of Atlanta, spent a day here recently. He is engaged in selling 250 building lots in Atlanta on the installment plan, and is meeting with success here and elsewhere. ~Messrs. WALTER EVANS, OTTO STALLINGS and JAMES STEPHENSON, three Newton County young men, are progressing finely in their studies at the Commercial College in Lexington, Kentucky. ~The home of Mr. and Mrs. ALFRED N. HAYS, has been made happy for the past week by visits from a number of kindred from abroad, among them being the good mother of friend Alfred, who is beloved by all who know her. ~Rev. R. J. BIGHAM, Presiding Elder of the Oxford District, will preach in the Methodist Church at 11 a. m., Sunday next, April 12th. Subject: “The Liquor Traffic in Newton County.” Everybody invited to attend this service. ~Mr. EUGENE EVERITT is building a modern new cottage home, on Clark Street. When completed it will be a beauty. Being an energetic, honest and progressive young man it is but right and proper that himself and good wife have a handsome, as well as a happy home. ~Rev. W. H. LAPRADE, now of New Orleans, has sent us a “photo” of himself which we appreciate and prize. Although he is far away his many friends and brethren here will never cease to love him for the many good deeds performed and able sermons preached while Pastor of the Covington Methodist Church. TOWN AND COUNTY, EVERYTHING AND EVERYBODY ~Services were held at Holly Springs Primitive Baptist Church Saturday and Sunday last. Elder WM. ADAMS, the Pastor, preached an excellent sermon each day. ~The county authorities should look after the public road from Mr. J. T. CORLEY’S plantation to Yellow River, and known as the Flat Shoals Road. It is in a deplorable condition and has been for a long time. It was the intention of the last grand jury to recommend working on this road at once. It should be put in passable order or abandoned. ~Messrs. P. W. WARREN and GEORGE W. DENNARD, in addition to their other business, will put in 150 acres in cotton and forty or fifty acres in corn and grass. From their farm they expect to realize about 160 bales of cotton, besides saving an abundance of hay and making enough corn to feed their stock and some to sell. ~Just before communion service, at the Methodist Church Sunday, Miss STELLA STEWART arose from the front pew and in tender and eloquent terms presented Rev. R. W. BIGHAM with a paper entitling him to life membership in the Juvenile Missionary Society. It was a picture never to be forgotten, a fair young girl cheering the heart of an aged minister, who had preached the gospel at home an in foreign countries, and asking that the Lord would renew his strength and make his last days his happiest and his best. ~Mrs. EMMA WILLINGHAM, nee Miss EMMA WRIGHT, has just received an elegant new stock of handsome spring and summer millinery goods, that to be appreciated must be seen, and it is a pleasure for her to show these goods to all the ladies. In the hat, bonnet and ribbon department everything is full and complete. Miss ELLA K. GRIFFIN has two of the finest cows in the state. ~Dr. CANDLER goes to Atlanta with the Seniors this year. ~Prof. LUNDAY HARRIS preached one of the finest Easter sermons ever preached in Oxford. ~Miss LUCIE MEANS gave a “Tackey Party” on Friday night in honor of her guest, Miss MARY HARGROVE, of Newton Factory. ~The following have been elected councilmen for the city of Oxford: Prof. H. H. STONE, Prof. L. H. HARRIS, Prof. R. M. MCINTOSH, Mr. W. B. GRIFFIN, Mr. U. G. HARDEMAN, Rev. W. A. PARKS, Prof. J. F. BONNELL. HERE AND THERE ~Mr. A. H. S. DAVIS and family have moved to Atlanta. ~Mr. LOGAN SIGMAN, of Rockdale, spent Saturday here. ~Rev. W. H. MCMEEN held interesting services at Bethany Church, most of last week. ~Gen. SCOTT and family now occupy a portion of Mr. CHARLES H. WHITE’S large and commodious residence. ~Mr. R. C. COOK is President of the Newton County Temperance Association, and R. F. EAKES, Secretary. ~Major JNO. B. DAVIS will lead the Young Men’s Prayer Meeting at the Methodist Church, next Sunday afternoon, at 4 o’clock. Let all who can be sure to attend this service. ~Mr. THOMAS CAMP, of Atlanta, spent Friday here. He has recently bought 7,000 acres of land in south-west Georgia. TOM is a man of nerve, and always would bore with a big auger. ~Some one is giving lamp lighter RUFUS CRUSE trouble by re-lighting a lamp near the depot after it has been extinguished.
