J. M. PACE is recovering from a severe spell of sickness. ~Mr. HARMON HICKS has moved to Mr. EUGENE EVERITT’S new house. ~Rev. Dr. J. N. BRADSHAW and wife, of Madison, Florida, have been on a visit to loved ones here. ~Mr. ALFRED N. HAYS has about completed his handsome new residence on Monticello Street. ~Professor and Mrs. DAVANT returned from a week’s visit to friends in Butler, Ga., on Saturday. ~Miss CARRIE SOCKWELL, one of Newton County’s fairest daughters, has returned to Lucy Cobb Institute. ~Mr. W. C. CLARK has had a severe attack of the grip, but is slowly recovering from its effects. ~The baby boy of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. COOK, is slowly recovering from a dangerous spell of sickness. ~Mr. GEORGE D. BUTLER and family have moved to their plantation near town where we trust they will be happy, healthy and prosperous. ~Col. J. N. HALE has charge of the Conyers Solid South and will give the people one of the best papers in Georgia. ~Mr. “DOCK” MIDDLEBROOK, a very pleasant gentleman from Texas, has been on a visit to his old home and friends here, being the guest of his brother, Hon. L. L. MIDDLEBROOK. ~Sheriff H. B. ANDERSON and wife have moved to their home on Washington Street, near the public square, formerly occupied by Mr. HARMON HICKS. ~Mrs. L. F. LIVINGSTON and her daughter-in-law, Mrs. CARRIE LIVINGSTON, accompanied Congressman LIVINGSTON to Washington City Sunday, where they will spend two or three months. ~Mr. I. N. SMITH having purchased the mercantile business of Mr. C. S. JARBOE, at Snapping Shoals, he will devote his time in the store at that place this year. If you desire bargains call on Mr. Smith. ~Mr. CHARLIE DENNARD will run his father’s large farm in Rockdale this year. He is a most excellent young gentleman and made many friends during the time he was in business here. Success to our friend. ~Mr. HENRY BRANHAM and wife, of Oxford, left on Jan. 1st. for California as missionaries from the North Georgia Methodist Conference. Miss PAULINE DUNLAP, formerly of Covington, also left for the Methodist Mission at Laredo, Mexico. ~Mr. and Mrs. JAMES COOK, of Wyatt District, have moved to Covington and are occupying the residence purchased from Sheriff ANDERSON. No better people can be found in this country than our venerable friend and his good and noble wife. ~Misses MOORE and BONNELL, of Oxford, and Miss BONNELL, of China, spent a day or two in Covington recently as the guests of Miss IDA EDWARDS. They returned to Wesleyan College Monday. All are cultured beauties, lovely in person and captivating conversation. TOWN AND COUNTY ~Street car conductor SIMEON WHEELER got caught in the rain storm Friday night. He saved the handle and two ribs of his umbrella. ~We learn that Mr. GEO. W. SWORDS will open a liquor saloon in Atlanta, and that Mr. RICHARD MCCOULLOUGH’S will have charge of it. ~Mr. J. J. SMITH has purchased the 7 acre lot, between the new railroad and his Brittain place, from Mr. W. B. LEE, paying $100 an acre for the same. ~Capt. G. D. HEARD and Mr. M. W. DAVIS have purchased the mercantile business heretofore belonging to J. A. B. STEWART & SON, and are adding new goods to their stock. These gentlemen are personally very popular with the people.
