Edward KING, the great railroad builder, spent a day or two here last week. ~Col. J. F. ROGERS has been commissioned Solicitor General for the county court of Newton County. ~Miss Della DOWNS, an Oak Hill district beauty, has been on a visit to Miss Belle Sullivan, of this city. ~Mr. Thomas CHANNELL caught a 12 pound carp fish with hook and line in Yellow River the other day, while fishing for suckers. ~Ex-Gov. MCDANIEL was with us several days last week. He was looking well and talked around Democratic doctrine on the brethren. ~Mr. O. N. SMITH has moved from Snapping Shoals to Stone Mountain. We wish our friend health and prosperity in his new home. ~Owing to the absence of the Pastor, Rev. Mr. STEWART, an Emory College student, preached at the Methodist Church Sunday morning. ~Rev. Dr. CRAIG, an eminent Presbyterian divine, preached two excellent and interesting sermons at the Presbyterian Church here Sunday morning and night. ~Mr. Thomas Nelson PAGE, the polished Virginia author, speaker and reader, gave a most excellent literary entertainment at Oxford Saturday evening. It was a rich treat to all who heard him. ~Col. R. W. BIGBY, Dr. E. H. YANCEY, Dr. J. C. ANDERSON, Capt. J. M. PACE, Mr. H. A. JONES and perhaps others attended the meeting of Confederate Veterans in New Orleans early in April. ~The Conyers Banner notes the visit of one of our charming young ladies. thusly: "Miss Ida EDWARDS, a beautiful and accomplished young lady of Covington, visited in the city Saturday and Sunday, the guest of Mr. C. M. TAYLOR. ~Dr. Frank B. WRIGHT has concluded to move from Atlanta to San Antonia, Texas, on account of being in feeble health. He had a very heavy practice in Atlanta, but deems it best to seek a different climate, as a severe cold has settled in his lungs. We wish our friend health and prosperity in his new home. ~We get this personal item from the Atlanta Constitution: “Eighty-six years of age and Tuesday was the first time in his life that he ever rode upon a train. Such was the experience of Mr. William RHODESBERRY, who lives within six miles of Covington.
