Lee Gray, of Greensboro, a graduate of Emory College in 1887, who has been visiting his brother at Columbus, left Monday for Shanghai, China. He goes as a missionary under the auspices of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. ~Gov. Gordon entertained Gov. Hill and party, of New York, at breakfast last Thursday. Besides the family of Gov. Gordon there were popular and prominent visitors, among the number was Miss Annie Pace, of our city. It was an enjoyable occasion. ~We are told that Doctor Frank B. Wright was the first physician to reach Mr. W. A. Dyer and family after they were poisoned, and he had them all out of danger in a few hours. Of course, Dr. J. C. Anderson rendered important and valuable assistance when he arrived. ~A large delegation from Newton county attended the Exposition and witnessed the sham battle one day last week. Col. J. W. Anderson, who was a courier for General Longstreet during the war, was present and took part in the battle, being mounted and filling the position of courier under his gallant old commander. ~Mr. John F. Banks, who has been on a visit to friends and dear ones in this county, returned to his home in Bluffton, Texas, Monday. Fate has been kind to our friend in his adopted home. He has wooed and won one of the fairest of Texas’ sweet daughters, is a prosperous stock raiser and successful farmer. Long may he live and happy always be. ~Mr. Hugh White recently spent several days abroad. He visited Atlanta and was well pleased with the Exposition. It gratifies us to learn that this good man is enjoying fine health by his generosity to the poor during and since the war he has endeared himself to all our people. Few better men ever lived or died than is our friend. May he be spared to his people for many years to come. ~In Sunday’s Constitution we find the following: “The Atlanta district has began to show interesting features. It seems certain that Judge Stewart will have opposition. In the last race Col. EMMETT WOMACK of Covington, was a Stewart man. Now it is intimated that he will be a Womack man. The Colonel has the hallelujah lick and as a stump speaker has hardly a superior in the state.
