Henderson saw a large red fox in the road near Brown’s Bridge one day this week. Hunters take notice. ~Rev. Mr. Kinnebrew, the new Professor in the Female College, preached at the Baptist Church in Covington, last Sunday. ~The City Council at their last meeting re-elected H. W. Smith, Marshal and A. M. Cureton, Clerk, for the ensuing year. The salaries of these officers were not increased but stand as formerly. ~Gov. Smith has seen proper to appoint JOHN _. HALL, Judge, and THOMAS B. CABINISS, Solicitor for the Flint Circuit. We have heard no objection offered to the appointment of Mr. Cabiness, but we think his Excellence could have made a better selection for the Bench. This Circuit possesses many eminent lawyers who would be far preferable to Mr. Hall as Judge. But Smith was under “obligations” to Hall and consequently he was honored by the Judgeship, much to the dissatisfaction of the people and bar of this Circuit. When he was elected Governor it was not expected that he would be guided by his personal preferences and ignore the talent and experience of such men as Judges, Floyd, Speer and others, and yield to such “obligations.” Had he appointed Hall, Solicitor, then, nothing would have been said. This act of Gov. Smith has rendered him unpopular with a number of the best men in this Circuit. Smith has simply played “the wild” in making the appointment. Hall is not to blame for accepting.
