J. F. ROGERS has a good hand and horse and is ready to do your plowing cheap and well. ~At a late meeting of the city council, it was ordered that all wooden awnings be removed from the front of the houses on the public square. ~Mr. Geo. W. W. STONE, of Oxford, can supply you with posts and lumber. He also has the celebrated Stone’s Improved Silk Cotton Seed for sale. See notice elsewhere. ~The county school commissioners have decreed that the teachers of Newton County are to meet at the Female College in Covington, on the second Saturday in February, to organize at 10 o’clock a. m. ~Mr. Geo. W. SWORDS will open a wholesale liquor house in one of the new brick buildings on the east side of the public square. At a recent meeting of the city council license was granted for this purpose. ~The Supreme Court has refused a new trial to the Negro, Seaborn SMITH, charged with outrage. He is now in Walton County Jail, but will be brought here during court in March to be re-sentenced. He will probably suffer the death penalty early in May. ~Mr. Franklin WRIGHT is now ready to supply farmers and others with the “Old Reliable” Mastodon Guano and Acid Phosphate. These goods are manufactured at the Georgia Chemical Works, in Augusta, Ga., have been sold and used in this section for 20 years, and have always given satisfaction. See Mr. WRIGHT at once. ~A man with a black bear was here the other day and tarried long enough to give Evans LUNSFORD’S livery stable dog a dumb chill. That bear was the only living thing that “Fritz” ever saw that he was afraid of. He found a sunny spot in the distance, and with his tail between his legs, looked toward the stable, then at the bear and howled. ~We are told that a white man by the name of MOSS, eloped with another man’s wife, by the name of MANN, in Rocky Plains district, a short time since. It is also said that the couple carried off a cow and calf belonging to the woman’s husband, which it is supposed they sold to get money enough to take a bridal tour by rail and spend the honey moon abroad. ~A dwelling house near the Brick Store fair ground was destroyed by fire one night last week. It belonged to Mr. Isaac A. STANTON and was occupied by colored people. The cause of the fire is supposed to have been a defective chimney; however, this is not certain. Loss about $600 on the house, besides what was lost by the occupants. This makes the third dwelling house that Mr. STANTON has lost by fire within the past two years, without a dollar’s insurance on any of them. NEWBORN NEWS ~The firm of Pitts & Porter has been succeeded by J. C. & F. R. Pitts. ~Mr. and Mrs. Thomas GLASS are recovering from severe spells of sickness. ~Capt. Robt. CHILDS is eating oranges and hunting deer in Florida for a few weeks. ~Major FOLDS has a bale of cotton that he has been keeping 17 years. At one time it was worth 20 cents a pound, but he held it with the hope of a rise. Alas, for human expectations! ~We learn that Mrs. BAILEY has a tedious time in learning some of her scholars the art of music. When W. P. TAYLOR, J. O. STANTON and a few others begin to take lessons, she may look out for trouble and vexation of spirit, sure enough. ~Mr. J. F. TOLER will begin the erection of his house in a few days. Mr. J. C. STANTON will also erect a handsome new cottage in a few days. Rumor says that Brother TAYLOR will rent the TOLER house and take unto himself a better half.
