J. S. ANDERSON, Marshal of Social Circle, captured Joe BROWN, colored, Saturday, a noted cattle and sneak thief, and brought him to Covington, charged with stealing a steer from Mr. G. W. SWORDS. Joe has put four large $30.00 steers on the Social Circle market lately and lets them go at about $8.00 each. ~Mr. Oscar JACKSON, of Madison, has been in Covington with a view of purchasing some fine horses for his livery stables. Our horse dealers keep good stock and their prices are always reasonable. At present Mr. I. W. BROWN and Messrs. ANDERSON & LUNSFORD have several high steppers that are said to be thoroughbreds. ~Thursday last most of the members of the “Brothers and Sisters of Charity,’ the leading colored benevolent Society of Covington, celebrated the twentieth anniversary of their organization, at Henderson’s Mill, 7 miles south of town. A large crowd attended and the best of order was maintained, speeches made and big dinners spread. Within the past three years this Society has spent about $400 for benevolent purposes, and its membership is composed of the very best element of our colored people. ~The reunion of the Third Georgia regiment, at Athens on July 19th and 20th, will be one of the grandest and most pleasant affairs that ever came off in the south. Co. L and K. of the 3rd Ga., and the gallant old Troup Artillery, all of Clarke County, will unite to make the reunion a success. Athens, with her railroad facilities and her generous citizens, will be in position to make every visitor and veteran a welcome guest. The Hawkins Zouaves, of New York City, will send a delegation, and Co. H. of Newton County will be well represented. SOMEWHAT PERSONAL ~Col. John ROQUEMORE is a candidate for the legislature. Read his announcement in this paper. ~Mr. Thomas L. ANDERSON will spend most of the summer at Indian Spring for his health. Hope he will soon be sound and well again. ~Miss Charlie PORTER has returned from an extended visit to friends and relatives in Washington City, and is looking exceedingly well. ~Captain James M. PACE and Mr. J. T. CORLEY, Jr. attended the Grand Council of the Royal Arcanum, at Americus, last week and reports having had a very pleasant time. ~Miss Ida EDWARDS read an interesting article at the temperance meeting Monday night. At the next meeting, June 6, Miss Maud LEE will deliver an appropriate recitation. ~Mr. Charlie ADAMS and wife and Mr. Lee ADAMS and family spent a day or two of last week fishing on Alcova River. Other couples joined them, from Hays district, and a fine time was experienced by all. ~Col. L. L. MIDDLEBROOK and Judge E. F. EDWARDS spent two days at the Rocky Plains court ground last week attending to an arbitration matter in which a considerable amount is at issue. ~Rev. Dr. Warren CANDLER preached a temperance sermon at the Methodist Church, in Covington, Sunday. He must have his heart in the cause, for he is preaching, talking and speaking for the ‘dispensary plan’ whenever an opportunity is presented. ~Sheriff AUSTIN, of Rockdale County, Marshal ANDERSON, of Social Circle, and Sheriff Newt GLASS, of Henry County, spent Friday here. No better or more efficient officers can be found in this country than are these gentlemen. ~Miss May MALONE, who has been boarding at the home of Rev. T. J. SWANSON and going to school here, was called to her home in Greene County Saturday by a telegram announcing the death of her father.
