P. Berry, aged 46 years, died at his home in Rocky Plains district last Friday evening at 9:20 o’clock after three weeks illness with typhoid fever, and his remains were carried to Cherokee, S. C., for interment on Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock, the same hour his step-son, Col. J. P. Cooley, was buried in this county at Salem. Mr. Berry purchased the old Stephenson plantation last spring and moved to Newton county from South Carolina. Although he had only resided here a few months, all who knew him were high in their praises of his true Christian character and gentlemanly bearing. He was a practical farmer and was preparing to reap a fine harvest on his plantation this fall. He is survived by his second wife and by four children of his second wife, three daughters and a son. We extend condolences to them in their hours of bereavement. The Enterprise, November 8, 1907 Tribute of Respect Mr. W. P. Berry, who was our beloved assistant superintendent and faithful member of County Line Church, has been called from our midst to join in the song of the Church Triumphant. We mourn his loss, but not as those who have no hope. We feel his mansion has been prepared and our hearts go out in sympathy to the bereaved wife and fatherless children. We commend them to Him who has promised to be a Father to the orphans and widows. Therefore be it resolved: 1st- That in all the duties devolving upon him, he was ever true and faithful. 2nd- That he will be missed from our midst. His place in the Sabbath School; in society, and in the church, will be vacant. His mission with us was short but his memory we cherish. 3rd - That a page in our minutes be ascribed to his memory and that a copy of these resolutions be sent to the bereaved family and to The Enterprise.
