DEATH’S SAD ROLL
     On Monday night Judge G. M. T. Bower died at the home of his son, Mr. A. 
R. Bower in Covington. He was one of our oldest and best citizens. He has been 
sick a long time. May he sleep sweetly. A more extended notice of this good man 
will appear next week.

JUDGE G. M. T. BOWER
     The writer had been well acquainted with Judge Bower, for more than 30 
years, and he sincerely mourns the death of his old friend, which occurred in 
Covington one day last week. Judge Bower was past 70 years old when the 
Messenger called him to join the Silent majority, and he was a kind hearted 
man, and the better you knew him the more you loved him. He was a graduate of  
Emory College and was a man of talent and culture, but cared nothing for 
display or notoriety. He served as Sheriff of Newton county one or two terms, 
and for six or eight years past was Justice of Peace for the Town District. He 
made an efficient and faithful officer. He was a member of the Methodist 
church, and endeavored to obey the commands of his Lord. He leaves a loving 
wife and several devoted children to mourn his departure and to cherish his 
memory. For more than a year past he has been in very feeble health, but bore 
his afflictions with patience. His body was laid to rest in the family section 
of the city cemetery, in the presence  of members of his family and a large 
number of friends. May flowers of beauty always bloom above the grave of our 
dear departed friend.
