The Covington New, Sept. 18, 1924

J. H. Carroll, Sr. Dies In Atlanta Saturday
  Mr. J. H. Carroll, Sr., died in Atlanta at the age of 86 years. Mr.
Carroll was a Confederate Veteran having served throughout the war.
Funeral services and burial took place at Oxford, Ga., Monday.
  Mr. Carroll was a conductor on the Atlanta & West Point railroad for
many years after the civil war. Besides E. W. Carroll ,of Athens, he is
survived by the following children; J. H. Carroll, Atlanta; Prof. R. E.
Carroll, of Decatur; Mrs. W. J. Beam of Young Harris, Ga.; Mrs. R.W.
Boggus, Oxford; Mrs. Maggie Gray, Decatur; Mrs. E. C. Gunnin of Charlotte,
N. C.
