S. Carroll Mr. Wm. S. Carroll, one of Covington's oldest and best citizens, died at his home in Midway last Friday night at 8 o'clock. He had been sick for six weeks and during that period had not left his bed. Mr. Carroll was born in Newton County on May 24th, 1828 and would have been seventy-five years of age had he seen his next birthday. When a young man he went to Atlanta and entered merchantile life and for over thirty years was in the wholesale business there. He is survived by his wife and nine children, Mr. J. H. Carroll, of Covington; Mr. A. H. Carroll, of Chicago, Ill.; Mr. J. W. Carroll, of Covington; Mr. P. W. Carroll, of Atlanta; Mr. Rollo Carroll, of Covington; Mr. Frank Carroll, of Covington; Miss Mattie Carroll, of Covington; and Mrs. R. L. Mobley, of Monroe. The funeral services were held at his home Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, and were conducted by Rev. J. E. Dickey. The interment was in Oxford.
