OBITUARY
  Departed this life on the morning of the 1st inst., at his residence in 
Covington, Dr. F. M. CHENEY, of heart disease, 54th year of his age.
  The announcement of this sad intelligence, produced a shock in this 
communtiy. Apparently in the enjoyment of his usual good health, he was in the 
___ _____ discharge of his duties up to the evening preceding the fatal attack, 
when feeling unwell, he left his office at about 5 o'clock and went home. He 
passed a sleepless night, but in the morning appeared quiet and easy and in 
response to a call to visit a patient, promised to go immediately after 
breakfast. His companion retired to prepare him a cup of coffee and returned to 
find him a corpse. Thus passed away a good citizen, an able and skillful 
physician and a fervant and zealous member of Christ's Kingdom on earth.
  While friends deplore his departure and his loss to the Baptist Church at 
Covington is irreparable, it is within the sacred precincts of his own house 
that this heavy calamity fills with blighting and crushing weight.
  If one may be permitted to speak of the family circle, no greater ________ 
can be pronounced than has been truly said of him," that the precincts of his 
own family constituted a little Heaven on earth." His happiness was at home.
  Dr. Cheney was a man of rare virtues. He was ever an advocate for temperance, 
morality and all the traits of character that elevate and improve the moral 
condition of mankind.
  At an early age in company with his Father he settled in Texas, and there in 
the year 1847 he consecrated his life to his Redeemer, and united himself with 
the Baptist Church. In the year 1848 he removed to Georgia, his native State, 
and soon after was called to the ministry. In that capacity he labored 
faithfully and zealously to the day of his death, and his friends have the 
consolation to believe that his efforts are not without their fruits, and that 
his redeemed spirit is now in the full fruition of the joys of the finally 
faithful.
  Dr. Cheney was a man of perserverance and energy, and whatever undertaking 
claimed his attention he took hold of it with a will and determination to 
succeed. At the close of the late struggle he was left with but little of this 
world's goods, and had to commence life anew. He realized the situation and did 
not despair, but like a true man went nobly to work, and succeeded by honest 
effort and incessant toil in accumulating and supplying his family with all the 
necessaties and comforts of life. May we all take warning by this sudden stroke 
of Providence, and like him be ready should the summons come for us at an 
unexpected hour.
