He died at his home in Midway last Wednesday night of dropsy, at the age of 64. He was one of the oldest and best known Negroes in Newton County, and had the respect and confidence of all the white people in Covington. He was born a slave, and after the war, he learned to read and write, and became a potent factor in every election. He was a democrat in politics, and took a deep interest in all questions of public interest. Several years ago, Congressman Livingston secured him a good position in the post office department, at Washington and he always was faithful in the discharge of every duty entrusted to his care. About one year ago he was stricken down with disease, and had to give up his position. He returned to his home here a short while ago, but was unable to rally from the disease, until Wednesday night he succumbed to the inevitable. His funeral was largely attended by the colored people, and deep regret expressed by all, at his untimely death.
