The Georgia Enterprise, October 2, 1890
     Mr. Claude Meriwether, who lives in Jasper County, shot and killed Mr. 
John Cordell, of the same county, with a Winchester rifle one day last week. 
Mr. Pitts Cordell’s sister has been cooking for Meriwether, and Cordell advised 
her to quit it, as Meriwether’s mind was unbalanced. This led to the killing. 
Mr. Cordell was one of the best citizens of the county. He leaves a wife and 
five children.
