L. Cowan, at Rowley, Newton county, Jan. 30, 1904, Miss Evie Cowan, in the 19th year of her age. Nearly two years ago, just as she stood on the threshold of fair young womanhood, with the present joyous and future full of promise, disease laid its relentless hand upon her. Throughout the long months of suffering she exhibited the most marked patience. Her smiles seemed borrowed from the skies and a saintly sweetness, not of this earth, shed a brightness about her. To visit her sick room was a genuine pleasure. About five years ago she made an open profession of religion, joining the Presbyterian church. God thus graciously prepared her for her suffering, ere he called upon her to endure it and his name was glorified as she passed through the furnace of affliction. None who witnessed the patience and gentleness but must feel that there was a holy purpose in her protracted sickness and that in her "patience had her perfect work." After a fitting funeral discourse by her pastor, Mr. Echols, she was laid to rest in Hopewell Cemetery on the afternoon of the 31st, amid a large concourse of sorrowing friends. That God may bless this dispensation to the spiritual good of many and comfort the bereaved, is the prayer of the writer.
