GEORGE M. CUNNINGHAM On Thursday morning, Jan. 3rd, Capt. George M. Cunningham died at his home, near Salem Camp Ground, 7 miles west of Covington. Age about 72 years. The news of his death brought sadness and sorrow to the hearts and homes of all our people, for he was honored, esteemed and loved by all who knew him. He was a man of honor and integrity, courteous and charitable at all times. For many years he was engaged in the merchantile business in Covington and from here he moved to his plantation and began farming. He was a fine business man and a prosperous and influential citizen, being Justice of the Peace in Stansell's district for many years. Captain Cunningham was always kind to the poor and needy. His home was always open to his friends and himself, good wife and charming daughters understood the art of entertaining. No better man ever lived or died than was our friend. He was a true and loyal Mason, an earnest and consistent member of the Methodist church who loved his brethren and did his best to serve his Lord. The funeral service came off on Friday after which the body was laid to rest in the family section of the new cemetery in Covington. Rev. J. E. Dickey, of Emory college, officiated at the burial, in the presence of a large number of kindred and friends from Newton and other counties, who had come to pay a last and loving tribute to this good and noble man. It would require many columns to record the good and noble work and deeds performed by Captain Cunningham. He leaves a wife, several daughters, many relatives and hosts of friends to mourn his death and lament his loss. May he sleep sweetly, and may flowers of beauty ever bloom above his grave.
