D. Elliott, near Salem, Carl Elliott died from the effects of an attack of typhoid fever. He had been in the drug business in Atlanta for about six months, but feeling unwell, came home about a week before he died. Carl was the youngest of four brothers. He was 20 years of age and was a young man of ability and character. He was loyal to his friends and generous to his enemies, tho' of the latter he had but few. He loved his home and family. He was a member of the Methodist church and when at home led the singing. He was very popular. Carl went to school to the editor of the Enterprise for three years. He was one of the most loyal pupils and friends I ever had. He always told me of his plans, etc., and asked my advice about anything he engaged in. Only a few days ago I received a long letter from Carl, telling me of his business success, his future, etc. He had unbounded confidence in me and I always trusted and believed in him. There are very few instances where such relationships as existed between Carl and myself exists between a pupil and a teacher. In my saddest hour he did all he could for me. Knowing him as well as I did and enjoying the hospitality of his home frequently and becoming familiar with him and his family, naturally I loved him and I mourn today with his loved ones his sad departure.
