Nov. 3, 1829, and died of spinal meningitis at Eudora, Jasper county, Dec. 30, 1886. It was the good fortune of the writer to have known him intimately for thirty odd years. He was a quiet unassuming man, yet firm in his convictions, clear in his judgements and prompt in his decisions. His uniform cheerful spirits, and the keen appreciation of the rights of others, was one of the strongest characteristics of his generous nature. He was a devoted husband, a tender and indulgent father, kind and obliging as a neighbor. He was successful in business and of his bounty his friends shared liberally, and being surrounded by an ample competency, he many times became the foster father of the needy. Another, and perhaps the most prominent characteristic of his nature, was honesty. He was honest in his relations to his church, honest in his relations to society, honest in his relations to his neighbors, and scrupulously honest in all of his business transactions. Gifted with a highly sensitive nature, he was strong in his affections, genial as a companion and steadfast as a friend.
