It is an account of the death and burial of Mr. NEWTON B. FRANKLIN, brother of our friend and fellow-citizen, Mr. A. S. Franklin. As the re-union is near the item will be read with interest: “A lady who has just reached Petersburg from the seaboard, informs us that Portsmouth was on last Sabbath week, the scene of the largest funeral procession ever witnessed in that section. It was occasioned by the death of a young man named Franklin, who was a member of the Young Guards, Third Georgia Regiment, formerly commanded by Colonel, now Gen. Wright. Young Franklin was too unwell to be removed at the time Norfork was evacuated from his illness. The entire loyal portion of Portsmouth turned out to do honor to his remains. Our informant states that it is estimated there were three thousand persons in the procession, including many of both sexes, of the most respectable portion of the community. There were five clergymen who joined in the procession, the Rev. Dr. Handy, of the Presbyterian persuasion, officiating at the church and the grave. The coffin was covered with a secession flag and the ladies bedecked the tomb with many secession bouquets. Federal officers and soldiers witnessed the solemn and imposing pageant, but, there was no interference on their part.” File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/newton/obits/f/franklin5892gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/gafiles/ File size: 2.1 Kb
