GRIFFEN One of the City's Best Known Physicians Died Monday Shortly after one o'clock Monday afternoon, Dr. George G. Griffen one of the best known Covington physicians and citizens passed away at his home on Clark street, after a sickness of about three weeks. The news of his death spread rapidly and many feeling tributes were paid him by his friends and admirers. It can be truthfully said that no citizen of Covington has enjoyed more popularity and esteem and if there was ever a man who passed through life and died without an enemy, Dr. Griffen was that man. The funeral service was conducted at his home Tuesday afternoon by Rev. R. C. Cleckler and his remains taken to Oxford for interment. The veterans of Jefferson Lamar Camp, No. 305, U. V. C. of which he was an honored member, attended the funeral in a body and acted as honorary escort in the procession. Arriving at the cemetery in Oxford, they formed a circle around the grave, and remained standing, with bowed heads, until their beautiful and impressive burial ceremony was read by the commander, and prayer offered by their chaplain. Dr. Griffen was sixty-nine years of age and is survived by two brothers and one sister, J. H. Griffen, of College Park, C. M. Griffen, of Covington and Mrs. Frank M. Means, of Oxford.There are five children living, Mrs. T. R. Jones, of Cartersville, Mrs. Robt. Tompkins, of Helen, Mr. Robt. Griffen, of C?, Mr. ? ? ,and Susie Griffen, of Covington. During the Civil War he was a surgeon in the Confederate Army and at the time of his death was a prominent member of the local camp, Confederate veterans.
