A. M. held on the 9th day of February, A. L., 5887, and A. D., 1887, we, the undersigned, were appointed a committee to draft suitable resolutions commemorative of the death of our lamented brother, J. S. THOMAS, who departed this life on the 8th day of February, in the year of our Lord, 1887, in the 29th year of his age, and whose mortal remains were quietly laid to rest with masonic ceremonies, in the cemetery at Oxford. Brother J. S. Thomas was born in Knoxville, Tenn, on the 12th day of October, in the year of our Lord, 1858. In performing the duty thus imposed upon us, we drop a tear of sorrow, over the sad bereavement that his untimely death begets. We feel deeply impressed with the uncertainty of life, and the surety of death. Surely no man knoweth the day nor the hour when the Son of Man cometh. Brother Thomas was cut down in early manhood, when intellectual vigor was asserting its progressiveness. He was truly a good mason. He was religiously devoted to the duties imcumbent upon him as an officer of our lodge, and reflected credit upon our time honored institution. We deeply grieve over this severance of our connection; but, in doing so, we are greatly consoled in the certain knowledge that we will be re-united in that great Grand Lodge above, where brotherhoods are never severed, where there are no confusions, where peace and harmony forever prevails, and amid the brightness of those hieroglyphics, that none but craftsmen ever saw, or can understand, will we forever labor always in the presence of God Almighty, our Great Grand Master. Therefore, be it RESOLVED, 1st That Golden Fleece Lodge has lost a rare and worthy brother, and masonry a shining light. 2nd. That we tender to his bereaved family our deep sympathy, and sincere condolence, in their irreparable loss. 3rd. That a copy of this memorial be presented to the family of our deceased brother. 4th. That the Lodge room be draped, that we wear the usual badge of mourning for 30 days, as a slight token of our brotherly regard, and that a copy of this memorial be placed upon the minutes. L. S.
