All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/gafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Phyllis Thompson mandpthompson@bellsouth.net November 5, 2003, 9:23 pm The Covington News, June 17, 1927 DEATH OF CHARLIE MELL LUNSFORD Monday morning, June 13, the news was received in Covington of the tragic death of Charlie Mell Lunsford, known to all the young people of Covington as "Chunk" in a coal mine accident at Benham, Ky., in one of the big mines of the International Havester Company. The accident occurred at 4 o'clock in this morning just as the night shift was quitting work. Chunk was running one of the electric trains in the mine and was driving a train of empty cars when an automatic switch failed to work and he was crushed against the walls of the mine. Charlie Mell was only twenty-three, the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Lunsford, highly esteemed in Newton County but now both deceased. He was famous as a baseball player, having played in many local clubs and in the Cumberland Valley League of Tennessee, leagues in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas and was playing at the time of his death with the International team in Kentucky. He was greatly beloved for his splendid sportsmanship and his genial disposition. He leaves six brothers, Earl of Miami, Carl of Gulfport, Miss., Horace, Archer, Emmett and Kiser of Covington and three sisters, Mrs. H. B. Rogers, Miss Ora and Miss Fletcher Lou, all of Covington. A large number of friends and relatives gathered at the Baptist Church at 4 o'clock Thursday where the funeral services were conducted by Rev. Walker Combs. Mrs. J. L.
