J. E. Martin Dead Rev. J. E. Martin, one of the oldest and best known ministers of this county, died at his home in Rocky Plains district on Tuesday night. Rev. J. E. Martin was born in South Carolina about 65 years ago. He was educated at Erskine College, and some years later studied for the ministry in the theological seminary at Due West, S. C. In 1870, soon after he was ordained to the ministry, he came to Georgia, and was called to serve as pastor of the Hopewell Associate Reform Presbyterian Church in this county, and continued this pastorate until bad health compelled him to give up active work, some fifteen years later. Since then he had been confined to his room, and to his bed a great deal of the time. Although cut off from active Christian work in the pulpit, yet by his Godly example and strong faith, he had been a power for good to all whom he came in contact with and to those living in his community. Through all his years of suffering and confinement, his faith was ever triumphant and it may be truly said of him: “Blessed are they that die in the Lord.” Mr. Martin is survived by his wife and seven children: Mrs. T. G. Boyce, of Atoha, Tenn: Mrs. F. J. Cooledge and Mr. R. G. Martin, of Atlanta; Mrs. James R. Stephenson, of this city; Mrs. L. W. Jarman and Mr. E. G. Martin, of this county; Mrs. J. R. McCain, of Rome. All of whom with the exception of Mrs. Boyce attended the funeral at Hopewell Church on Thursday.
