P. H. MELL Sunday night last interesting and impressive memorial services came off at the Baptist Church in Covington, in honor of Doctor Patrich Hues Mell, late Chancellor of the University of Georgia, whose death cast a gloom of sadness over the State, from the mountains to the sea. The remarks of Rev. J. M. Brittain and Judge E. F. Edwards were touching and beautiful, for the tribute paid the memory of their “Father in Israel” came direct from the heart. Dr. Mell had been their Pastor and their personal friend, having administered the ordinance of baptism to them both. Eulogies were also delivered by Rev. R. J. Bigham, Judge J. G. Lester and Col. J. F. Rogers. Few, if any better men than Dr. Mell ever lived or died. He was the very soul of honor and every inch a man. His memory will live in the hearts of his countrymen so long as time shall last. It is not our intention to dwell at length at this time upon the life and character of this great and good man, for his history will one day be written and Georgian’s who read it will be proud of the record that this noble son has left behind. Poor and penniless, an orphan at the tender age of 14 years, unaided and alone he faced the inevitable, and fought the battle of life singe- handed until honor and fame crowned his efforts. His example is worthy of emulation and his untiring zeal, labor and energy furnishes food for thought for the young men of this day and generation. The world is better for having had such a man as Dr. Mell to live in it. Let us remember that: “The lives of great men all remind us That we may make our own sublime And in departing leave behind us Foot prints on the sands of Time.” File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/newton/obits/m/mell6966ob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 2.4 Kb
