A GOOD MAN CALLED HOME
  Mr. John L. McCord died at his home, six miles from town, on Dec. 30, 1897.
Aged 79 years and 3 months. He came to Newton county from Abbeville, S. C.,
in 1830, and has always been a useful and popular citizen. He was a Christian
gentleman, whom to know was to esteem and love. He raised a large family and was
a kind father, devoted husband and true friend. Mr. McCord was a social and 
benevolent man and will be missed and mourned by all who knew him. He was the 
father of Mr. J. F. McCord, of this city, who attended the burial on Friday, 
which took place at the family cemetery, or Smith grave yard, near the old
home, at 8 p. m.
